When
Tom and Barb Travis were searching for a name for their newly converted
barn/guest lodge, they merely looked outside their windows for
inspiration. The scene is postcard-perfect. Vast expanses of cloudless
azure skies encompass gently rolling plains where native prairie grasses
sway in
the ever present South Dakota wind. By evening, the sky is washed in
watercolor pastels as the sun sinks low over the Missouri River hills in
the distance. At nightfall, a hush settles over the prairie and the
stars come out to twinkle and dance in a light show that stirs the soul.
And hence, the name "Prairie Skies".
Many an artist has tried
to capture the special magic that is the prairie. And yet it remains
something of a mystery, awesome and powerful, something that must simply
be experienced. And at "Prairie Skies Country Inn" Tom and Barb provide
the perfect setting in which to experience the prairie. With the same
spirit of adventure that their pioneer ancestors homesteaded this area,
the Travis family set out to create a unique country lodge that would
capture the essence of the prairie and the heritage of the local people.
From the crumbling
remains of a long-vacant barn emerged a modern lodging facility with
every amenity. Only the photo of the original structure attests to the
fact that this place once housed all types of farm animals. From the
specially designed quilt that hangs on the wall beside the fireplace to
the work of local artists that adorn the room, "Prairie Skies" exudes a
homespun, country charm that invites visitors to remove their shoes,
make themselves comfortable and sit a spell. And whether you've come to
take part in the time-honored tradition of a South Dakota pheasant hunt,
or have gathered the family together for a long overdue reunion or
simply want to escape from the stress of your everyday routine and enjoy
a simpler, slower pace, the staff at "Prairie Skies" will cater to your
every need.
Your
day begins with a free continental breakfast that always includes
rolls, juice, coffee, tea and cereals or custom design your stay to fit the needs of your group.
Barbeque on the gas grill in the picnic area or use the fully equipped
kitchen and prepare your own meals. Custom catering is also available
for large group gatherings.
What better way to
experience prairie nights than to roast marshmallows over a campfire
while stargazing? Tom has even been known to hitch up a trailer and give
hayrides around the countryside. A miniature replica of a covered wagon
makes a great tent for anyone
who
literally wants to sleep under prairie skies. If your day of adventure
has led to overexertion, soothe your aching muscles in the eight seat
hot tub with a full body massage seat, or simply relax on one of several
patios and watch time pass. Listen to the prairie sounds. Retire in the
evening to one of five bedrooms each with their own baths for privacy.
Try to catch a glimpse or
hunt species of
abundant wildlife that inhabit the area. Visit a
Hutterite Colony. Play
a round of
golf.
Fish for
prize-winning walleyes. Boat, ski or swim at beautiful Lake Francis
Case. Hitch a ride behind a team of beautiful
Six-J's Jingle
Bell Belgins. Ride your horse across uncharted prairie fields.
Watch regional
cowboys rodeo at the Yellow Rose Arena. Sample traditional Dutch
delicacies at the local bakery. Stop in at the Creamery featuring unique
local artistry, one of a kind hand crafted items, as well as antiques
and collectables. Learn about Platte's history from the museum in the
lower level. Plus shop any of
Platte's unique businesses on Main Street.
The possibilities are
endless. So is the hospitality. Whatever your reason for coming, you're
sure to find a reason to return to "Prairie Skies". Savor the
experience.
